An Illustrator's Tender Work: The Fisherman and His Soul
In the story ''The Little Mermaid'' by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, the prince marries another woman instead of the mermaid in the end. However, Cho, Pei-hsin, the winner of the International Award for Illustration Bologna Children’s Book Fair - Fundación SM, makes a twist, a happy ending, to this fairy tale in her illustration work- the beautiful white mermaid and the fisherman loving each other.

As we know that The Fisherman and His Soul (Spanish: El Pescador Y Su Alma) by the Irish author Oscar Wilde is a fairy tale that Wilde wrote for his two children. It's a story based on ''The Little Mermaid'' by Hans Christian Andersen. The story is about a fisherman falling in love with a mermaid, and the fisherman tries ways to send his soul away to get together with the mermaid.

Pei-Hsin Cho is the Winner of the International Award for Illustration Bologna Children’s Book Fair - Fundación SM in 2021. Cho transcribed the fantasy tale - The Fisherman and His Soul (Spanish: El Pescador Y Su Alma) by Oscar Wilde - into her illustration work. She depicts this classic story with her imaginative, delicate style - surrounded by mild, sage green shades and bringing people into a story about soul, love, happiness, and sadness.

The Importance Disputation of Soul and Love
The young fisherman goes fishing every evening and casts the fish net into the sea. One day, the fisherman finds something caught in his fishing net and is almost too heavy to pull back the fishing net. He tries as much as possible to pull the fishing net and lift the net to the surface of the water eventually. But, there's nothing, nor a fish, but instead, a beautiful mermaid sleeping in the fishing net. She is so beautiful when the young fisherman sees her at the first sight and feels amazed. Then, the fisherman falls in love with the beautiful mermaid.

However, the fisherman who has a soul cannot fall in love with the mermaid who is free of a soul. How does the fisherman choose between love and soul?

The Fisherman and His Soul (Spanish: El Pescador Y Su Alma) is one of the Master in Literature Oscar Wilde's most impressive literary works, so as the hardest one to understand. Created based on the story ''The Little Mermaid'' by Hans Christian Andersen, Wilde wrote the fairy tale to make a comparison between love, wealth, and wisdom. And the story makes a question to the readers - which matters among love, soul, mind, and body?

Cho, Pei-hsin, an emerging, talented Taiwanese illustrator, is the illustrator of the book El Pescador Y Su Alma adapted from The Fisherman and His Soul by Oscar Wilde. Cho attracts attention throughout the world after being awarded the International Award for Illustration Bologna Children’s Book Fair - Fundación SM in 2021. In this work, Cho uses the mysterious and elegant painting style to depict a world full of mystical atmospheres. In that world of the illustrating book, there are a dark soul, a white mermaid, and a neutral-colored fisherman. What is illustrated and shown in each background full of turbulent waters represents facing up challenges and questions.

Cho showcases her talented and skilled painting techniques in the book. Meanwhile, the adapted plots preserve the essence and high literary standard of Oscar Wilde's story. This work is worth spending time reading and entering the richly-layered world that Cho depicts.
