The exhibit "Icons & Identities: Masterpieces of Portraiture" is now displayed at the Chimei Museum. This is the debut worldwide touring exhibition organized by the National Portrait Gallery since its founding 166 years ago. The NPG is the first museum that collects the portraiture of historic figures, which has a huge collection of up to 215,000 pieces.

The NPG's portrait collections figuratively reflect a microcosm of British history since the 16th century. From William Shakespeare to David Beckham, from the British royal family to a politician, from the science field to the music field, there are 89 pieces of works on display in this special touring exhibition. It's worth paying a visit to this special exhibition for the displayed hundred of portraiture, which presents the images of UK's famous figures over the past five centuries.

A Veritable Record of the British Famous Figures
The National Portrait Gallery was established in 1856. The time-honored NPG has a diverse range of collections. The portraiture displayed at the Taiwan stop is the figures having great reputations in their generation worldwide. The exhibited portraits include Isaac Newton, Charles Robert Darwin, Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, the Beatles, Ed Sheeran, David Beckham, Anna Wintour, and more.

Those who have made great contributions to British history are the targets that the NPG collects. So includes those whose accomplishment is now making the history of British, no matter what fields belong.

Secret Greatness

Some figures to be displayed in this exhibit are unsung but make great contributions to the world secretly. People all know who is Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft. However, people are not so familiar with Tim Berners-Lee, best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web. Berners-Lee, instead of applying this exceptional invention for getting a patent, shares his research result with people across the world.

A Gift for the Chimei Museum's 30th Anniversary

This year just happens to coincide with the Chimei Museum's 30th anniversary since its founding. Instead of curating in chronological order, this exhibit is split into six major thematic sections, which are: Self-portrait, Fame, Identity, Love and Loss, Power, and Innovation. Such unconventional planning aims to present the portraiture full of historic significance, arts, and cultures to the local audiences of Taiwan.

The exhibition Icons & Identities: Masterpieces of Portraiture will display from 27th August 2022 to 28th February 2023. A six-month-long exhibition period brings the people of Taiwan an opportunity to pay a visit to appreciate the displayed 89 pieces of portraiture. This unique exhibition gives local audiences sufficient time to admire the details of each displayed portrait in person.
